If you’ve never read Animal Farm by George Orwell, you will likely have a hard time following this post. Here’s a quick summary of the book’s characters that you may want to read before reading the post.
It’s the final act of horror. Shear dread as one animal streaks at the site of it. It is horrifying, they know this by instinct. They look on in dread as the pigs march out on two legs. Before they can begin to verbalize their horror the sheep chant, “Four legs good, two legs better.” They do this long enough to shut the other animals up and the pigs walk away. This is wrong. But who can confirm the wrongness of their actions? If customs and fitra cannot be assumed then let us turn to our shared ethics —was not something there about the immorality of all who walk on twos? But the code of ethics as they remember is nowhere to be found, all there is left to be read —perhaps all there ever was; “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.”
During the hearings on abortion, a law professor continued to use the term “people with the capacity for pregnancy” the wordy terminology was strange and off-putting. The senator questioning her asked what we might all ask, “What is this term you keep using?” She becomes more long-winded until suddenly as if a switch went off she begins accusing the senator of “transphobia” and violence. Her words are so crazed and irrational that you can sense his exhaustion, after a short while he chooses to just move on.
Her words are not her own. On a pasture somewhere away from the other animals Squealor trains the sheep to trade in their old adage for a new one. “Four legs good, two legs bad” becomes “Four legs good, two legs better.” It takes time, but the training is successful. They bleat out the new ideology seamlessly.
The sheep are different from Squealer. Squealer too is simply a mouthpiece but he’s an intelligent mouthpiece. The difference between the two is that the sheep actually can’t have an intelligent conversation about the ideologies they espouse. The law professor can’t simply explain the terms she’s using to the senator and why without breaking into attack mode because her words are not her own, her indoctrination doesn’t go beyond repetitive garble. She’s meant to repeat her lines whether she believes them or not.
But Squealer is a different case. On the news show, The Hill, a liberal news anchor explains quite coherently when one might opt for that term over another. She even concedes that accusing people of violence might be going too far. She attempts to convince us that utilizing the term “people with the capacity for pregnancy” is perfectly rational because post-menopausal women and young girls don’t have that capacity. No, it’s not that they are trying to change the language, it’s simply that they want to be more accurate. Isn’t that just so rational?
The Squealers of the world are far more dangerous. They utilize points of agreement to win us over, then convince us of their goodwill, all while demanding —ever so kindly, that we accept a radical new ideology. Hidden within this polite request is the idea that; women can be men, men can get pregnant, that exceptions to the rule negate the rule, and that we lay people should forgo our basic common sense in favor of elitist definitions.
The animals know it is wrong for the pigs to walk on two legs not because of some kind of complicated analysis but because of a common innate sense of truth they all share. Who are we as human beings if we can’t depend on our shared common knowledge to define the basic categorical truth of what a man and woman are? If we leave it to our rulers they will change the definitions at whim, the dictionaries will update their language, medical centers will adopt new terminology, and they will treat us with hostility —or worst, silence us, for daring to question them.
But alas, the dogs. The dogs don’t speak but when your time comes —if you’ve asked too many questions, if you haven’t followed the rules, they will be sent to destroy you. Be it your Twitter account getting removed, your livelihood being taken away from you, or your very life being threatened. When they decide you are no longer worthy of being part of the discussion, they sic their dogs on you.
But, none of this happens without compliance. If the animals called out Napoleon’s abuses, Squealor’s lies, the inanity of the sheep, the viciousness of the dogs. If they simply fought back and kept fighting back, together, things would have ended much differently. The small concessions, the desire to be polite, and the voting for politicians who co-sign this insanity, only help to empower these liars and their attack on fundamental human truths. In one of Orwell’s final messages, he states, “The moral to be drawn from this dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one; don’t let it happen, it depends on you.” We’d do well to take heed to his words, and may God in His infinite wisdom, continue to guide us.
